In the distant past the artist belonged to a guild which offered work and set prices. In the 19th century, an academy awarded a degree, which served as a professional license. Colleges perform an adulterated contemporary equivalent. Yet if we reach back to Neolithic and tribal cultures, art as a species of play appears to share roots with magic and ritual.
For the immersive artist today, neither a professional nor an amateur stance seems to make for a comfortable fit, yet the world asks we choose. Is art work or play? And what does it mean to be serious, today?
Geoffrey Dorfman’s book, Out Of the Picture: Milton Resnick and the New York School, was published in 2003. His writing has appeared in Artforum, Stagebill Magazine, and catalog essays for major galleries and museums. Dorfman has lectured on Resnick’s work extensively.
